Gamma-ray sources associated with pulsars make up a significant fraction of the identified Galactic TeV source population. Recent studies have uncovered a new subtype of this source class, the pulsar halo. This source class has the potential to provide valuable insights into the evolution of pulsars and the propagation of cosmic rays in the interstellar medium. However at this point, only a few such sources have been detected.

The detection of such largely extended sources in the TeV energy range has mainly been facilitated by wide-field survey instruments, while Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes are better suited for providing a detailed description of the morphology of sub-degree scale gamma-ray sources. This work aims to improve the detection capability of IACT arrays for largely extended sources by developing a novel background estimation approach.

This background estimation technique is used in an analysis of the region around PSR B1055-52. The middle-aged pulsar, previously grouped with Geminga and PSR B0656+14 due to their similar properties, has long been suspected to host a TeV halo. Through the application of the advanced background estimation methods, this work is able to significantly detect degree scale emission in the region and confirm sub-ISM diffusion in the halo region, suggesting that the sphere of influence of the pulsar may extend further than previously thought.
