„Quantum Coherences of Nonclassical and Classical Sources“

In this talk we discuss different spatial interference phenomena of spatially incoherent light, i.e., Dicke superradiance and Dicke subradiance, which are originally known from quantum mechanics and usually require quantum emitters to be prepared in entangled Dicke states. The occurring interference patterns are characterized by highly enhanced (=superradiant) or highly suppressed (=subradiant) emission probabilities of single photons in particular directions. We show that these phenomena can also be produced with initially uncorrelated quantum and even classical light sources, when mth-order Glauber intensity correlations are measured in a general Hanbury Brown and Twiss setup. In particular, we find for the classical light sources correlation functions of identical shape to the quantum mechanical intensity distributions of super- and subradiance.
To explain the emission behavior of the classical sources we use a quantum mechanical description where the mth-order correlation function is split into a detection of m-1 photons at particular positions and a subsequent intensity measurement of the final photon. By determining the exact quantum states after the detection of the first m-1 photons, we find that the initially uncorrelated sources are projected into correlated classical symmetric and classical antisymmetric Dicke states, respectively.
