Surface-guided light for optical nanoscopy

I will address electromagnetic waves bound to and travelling along the surface of conducting materials, known since Sommerfeld’s theory on radio wave propagation. A modern scenario deals with ultra-slow infrared plasmons on graphene for exploring exotic electron correlations. The tool for this is the infrared s-SNOM or scattering-type optical near-field microscope. It derives its optical superfocusing ability from—surprise!—infrared surface plasmons that travel and slow down along the conical metallic probe of an AFM towards its very tip.
