Extreme events and enhanced nonlinear effects due to ultrafast photon-number fluctuations
Despite the common viewpoint that noise is always a disadvantage, “noisy” light sources with high photon-number fluctuations can be useful for multiphoton effects.
Pumping these effects with “noisy” light dramatically increases their efficiency and leads to even more fluctuating light.
The latter is notably interesting in the context of rogue waves and extreme events. In particular, we demonstrate up to 2 orders of magnitude
enhancement and generate tremendously fluctuating light through two nonlinear processes: optical harmonics and supercontinuum generation.
