A journey beyond singularities in a quantum space-time
Though very successful when gravity is weak, Einstein’s theory of general relativity shows its limitations when curvature of classical space-time approaches Planck scale, and breaks down at singularities such as the big bang. A new theory which is based on quantization of space-time, such as loop quantum gravity is needed to give answers to fundamental questions about the birth of our universe and final state of a gravitational collapse. In this talk, we will discuss the way insights from loop quantum gravity have led to models where singularities are absent. With effects of loop quantum gravity included, our expanding universe does not start from the big bang but is connected to a contracting branch via a quantum bounce. This results in a novel picture which can potentially connect quantum gravity with astronomical observations. In this talk, an overview of various results on singularity resolution in cosmological and black hole space-times will be presented.
